A gonzo residency that treats fiction as an early-warning system. Fellows imagine the biotech catastrophe that hasn't happened yet — then stop being novelists and become red-teamers, at a real bench, building the fix while the story is still warm. You don't get to leave a monster on the page. You have to prove you can put it down.
The premise
Every real biosecurity failure was imaginable years before it was buildable. The gap between someone could and someone did is where defenders should live — and almost nobody does, because naming the threat feels like building it.
The Red Horizon Fellowship closes that gap with a discipline we call gonzo biosecurity: the writer who dreams up the threat is the same person who has to disarm it — in a safety-reviewed lab, in real time, in front of witnesses. Then we hand the antidote to the people who need it, and burn the recipe. Fiction with a footnote that reads: solved, shipped, disclosed.
The loop
Every project runs the whole loop. A story is not finished until its countermeasure exists and works.
Write the scenario. A piece of speculative fiction imagining one specific, plausible way biotech goes wrong — a failure mode, never a manual. Character and dread do the work.
Output: the storyAdversarially tear the scenario apart with a biosecurity panel and a tabletop. Is it real? What's the actual attack surface? Which single assumption, if fixed, kills the whole plot?
Output: the threat modelThe gonzo sprint. Fellows hit the bench in a safety-reviewed community lab and build the defense — a detection assay, a screening hook, an open protocol, a policy ask — that neutralizes the whole threat class.
Output: the fixPublish the fix and the story together, after biosafety review. The hazard stays redacted. The defense goes to every lab that can use it. The demo goes on the floor.
Output: the dispatchWe never publish operational hazard information — no sequences, synthesis routes, uplift methods, or step-by-step threat recipes. Every dispatch clears a biosafety review before release, and any hazardous detail is held under managed, responsible disclosure to the right authorities and vendors first. Publish the cure. Redact the recipe.
Deliverables
A finished piece of speculative fiction plus immersive, first-person field reporting — the anchor piece a general reader feels in the gut. Runs in the Red Horizon series.
An open-source tool, wet-lab detection protocol, screening rule, or tabletop kit — demonstrated to work, released under a permissive license so any lab can pick it up.
A documented responsible-disclosure process: who got notified, what stayed dark, what changed. Signed off by the biosafety board before anything ships.
A demonstration at a public venue — most often the DEF CON Biohacking Village — where the fix gets shown, stress-tested, and handed to the room.
Plain-language brief that turns the scenario into a specific demand on funders, regulators, or vendors: here is the gap, here is the fix, here is who pays for it.
A facilitated tabletop or cold-open drill, packaged so any institution can run the same scenario internally — all tension, zero hazardous detail.
Featured case file
A near-future where cheap desktop DNA synthesizers ship with no meaningful screening. The story rides shotgun with a night-shift hospital microbiologist who works out that the outbreak on her ward didn't come from anywhere. It was printed.
The countermeasure crew built an open screening layer that sits between any synthesis tool and its device, a rapid detection panel for the biomarker class, and a tabletop kit now run by three community labs. The fiction ships with the exploit fully burned.

The scene
The fellowship plugs into the crews already doing hands-on biosecurity in the open. Fellows present fixes, run drills, and recruit collaborators across these rooms.
Home venue for our red-team demo track. Fellows present working countermeasures on the Village floor and in the Device Lab.
We mentor teams on responsible design and dual-use review, and recruit fellows from alumni who already think hard about misuse.

How a cohort runs
Craft sessions with biosecurity mentors. Each fellow drafts a scenario and a threat model. Wild imagination encouraged. Operational recipes never get written down. Not once.
A mixed panel of scientists, security researchers, and ethicists tears each scenario apart for plausibility and names the load-bearing weakness to hit.
Bench and build time in safety-reviewed community labs, paired with a technical mentor. A 72-hour capstone turns the defense from prototype to demo.
The board reviews every artifact. Hazardous detail stays dark. Vendors and authorities get notified where relevant, with remediation time built in.
Story and fix ship together as a Red Horizon dispatch, with a live demonstration — most often at the DEF CON Biohacking Village.

We're building the 2026 cohort: writers who can hold a pipette, scientists who can hold a reader, and red-teamers who'd rather build the fix than sit on the flaw.
